Choosing a great domain name for your website will help you to succeed.

It important to select your business website domain name wisely. People will associate you personally with the name. They will believe that it says something about you as an individual. When we set up Brown Bear Media Ltd we thought long and hard about the name. We eventually chose what we hoped would be an easy to spell and easy to remember name. At least one prospective client told us the reason she called us was because she liked the domain name. She thought we sounded like nice people.

Sadly there are no hard and fast rules about choosing a domain name. Some sites succeed despite(or perhaps because of) difficult to spell names. There has recently been a spate of sites with missing vowels, such as the photography site 'Flikr'.

However, there are some tips for those who would like some direction on deciding on a name.

The name should in some way reflect the product or service you are offering.

The name should be simple so it can be easily remembered.

The name should be short. Long names are harder to remember.

The suffix, (.com,.co.uk, .net etc) should suit the needs of your business. If you are only intending to reach a UK market then there is no need to bother about the extra expense of a .com domain name.

Once you have chosen a suitable name, make sure it is available by checking with a registration company such as 1and1.co.uk and then register your name as soon as possible, someone somewhere may register that name before you before someone else snaps it up.
