Facebook Finally Supports Hashtags

,

Social networking site Facebook has finally caught up with the rest of the world of social media and is now supporting #hashtag searches.

From 12 June 2013 hashtags on  Facebook will be clickable, just like on other social media networks such as Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest.

This now allows Facebook users to group comments on a topic of interest, add context to a post, contribute to larger discussions on a theme, or follow an event as it unfolds in real-time.

Use of the hashtag will also prove invaluable to advertisers on Facebook who will be able to identify and reach particular target audiences.

According to Facebook, their new hashtag system will allow you to:

  • search for a specific hashtag from your search bar e.g. #oscars
  • click on hashtags that originate on other services, such as Twitter
  • compose posts direct from the hashtag feed and search results
  • control the audience for your posts, including those with hashtags.

This latest update from Facebook is just the start of features it plans to roll out in the coming months. Other updates to help people more easily discover and participate in conversations across the world are to follow shortly.
