Internet Usage Statistics

For anyone thinking of starting a search marketing campaign, we’ve found some useful stats to show the size of the online market you could grab a chunk of.

Information Searches

  • Every day there are more than a billion searches on Google for information. (Google data, September 2010)
  • 20% of all searches in last 90 days have not previously been seen on Google.com.  (Google Internal Data, April 2010)

Ecommerce

  • 83% of UK online shoppers use search engines to research a purchase. (eMarketer, November 2010)
  • Over 2/3 of UK consumers ages 14 and older (roughly 26 million people) bought goods, travel or other services online at least once per month in 2010. (eMarketer, November 2010)
  • 37%, more than one in three, have bought an item they saw advertised on YouTube. (Entertainment Media Research, October 2010)
  • 200m mobile clips are streamed on YouTube every day.  (YouTube Blog, January 2011)
  • 28.5 million Brits make online purchases. This number is expected to increase to 32.5 million by 2014. (Verdict Research as cited by eMarketer, September 2010)
  • 70% of UK households (ie: at least one person in the household) use the internet for buying goods/services (Ofcom, August 2010)
  • Researching products and services is the second most popular online activity among Brits with 3 out of 4 UK internet users doing so.Office of National Statistics (ONS) as cited by eMarketer, September 2010
  • UK internet users now spend 64% more time using search engines (31 million hours per month in April 2010) than they did 3 years ago.UKOM, May 2010
